Allergies and Down Pillows

hypo allergenic pillow

Many high-end down pillows are hypoallergenic. Any hypo allergenic pillow has been constructed to eliminate allergens, such as dust mites.  The breathing capability of a hypoallergenic down pillow reduces moisture build-up throughout the night, discouraging the breeding of dust mites and cutting down on the amount the sleeper sweats, instead promoting a cooler, more refreshing feeling.  This process can help reduce allergy symptoms such as nasal and throat congestion, itchy eyes, and asthma attacks.

Down pillows often last longer than synthetic pillows if they are cared for well. They usually have a high thread count and utilize various types of cotton for their outer covering. Down pillows are available in a variety of sizes, densities, and firmnesses to customize the user’s comfort.

How to Control Your Allergies

Author: annabuczy2

allergycartoon.jpgThere are so many concerns today over allergies - whether they be from food, insect bites and stings, airborne particles, medicines, or chemicals.  In generations passed, little was known about these conditions nor was much study done on individuals who displayed discomfort or reactions under certain situations or conditions.  It was thought that you must just “tough it out”.

Thankfully today, studies have been done and research continues to help us understand the hows and whys.  The tendency to develop allergies is often hereditary, which means it can be passed down through your genes.  This doesn’t mean you will inherit a particular allergy, just the likelihood of having allergies is present.

How can we avoid allergies?  In cases of food allergies, complete avoidance becomes a life-saving necessity.  With airborne allergens you may need to:

  • Remove the family pet from certain rooms and regularly bathe them
  • Remove the carpet or rugs from the bedroom
  • Remove heavy drapes or other items where dust can accumulate
  • Clean frequently
  • Use special covers to seal pillows and mattresses such as allergy free pillow protectors
  • Keep windows closed during pollen season and change clothes after being outdoors and no lawn mowing
  • Avoid damp areas where mold has greater opportunity to develop

Depending upon the individual, medications or shots may need to be used to treat allergies.

We’ve come a long way baby in our knowledge and treatment of allergies!  Doctors and scientists continue to work to better understand allergies, improve treatment methods and possibly one day prevent allergies altogether for the more than 50 million Americans affected.

A Little Mistake That Can Ruin Your Health

Author: sleepeasy
July 23, 2010

allergywoman.jpgOften those with allergies are told to stay indoors but we need to realize that our homes can be dangerous areas for allergy sufferers as well.  Our homes are prime targets for dust mites and pet dander.  A few steps can help everyone breathe easier and provide that safe environment for them.

A first step would be choosing an air cleaning machine or air filter which filters out dust, pollen and other allergens.  It would be wise to have one in each room if the allergy sufferer is quite sensitive.  Special filters can also be fitted on your heating or air conditioning system depending on how your particular units are setup.

Carpets, unfortunately, while comfy on our feet, are also big targets to harbor those allergens.  An alternative is hardwood flooring or something similar but if you are not prepared to do that major of renovations, steam cleaning can help, but realize it is not a long term solution.    Perhaps you could start with removing carpet from one or two rooms and as money and time permits, continue on throughout the whole house.  If you are building or purchasing a new home, consider going with bare floors as much as possible.

The next target is bedding for allergens.  All pillows and mattresses can be covered with allergy proof protectors which can be zipped on and off, allowing easy wash and maintenance.  It is best to begin with new pillows if your present ones are more than a few years old and begin with a fresh clean allergen free pillow!

Before you tell that allergy sufferer to come indoors, make sure your indoors is safe for them!

What Every Person with Allergies Needs to Know!

allergywoman1.jpgDid you know you can be allergy-free?  Well, at least when you sleep, if you consider trying a hypoallergenic pillow.

Anyone suffering from different dust allergies should seriously consider a hypoallergenic pillow.  These pillows are designed to block out allergens such as dust mites, which we experience while sleeping.  It is also highly recommended that bedding be changed frequently as dust mites love living inside our bedding.  You must also consider looking at purchasing new pillows if your present pillows are older and soiled.  You may be providing the perfect home for dust mites if no changes take place!  Reducing these allergens you breathe in at night will reduce those typical allergy symptoms such as stuffy, runny nose, sore throat, asthma attacks, congestion or itchy eyes.

A good set of hypoallergenic pillows will ensure you don’t have anymore restless sleeps at night and since we sleep about 1/3 of our lives, we need to be properly rested to tackle the duties of the day every morning!

Combating Indoor Allergens

allergy free pillow

Spring is commonly associated with budding flowers and beams of sunshine, but for a portion of the population, spring only means one thing: allergies. When you’re constantly sneezing indoors, waking up with itchy eyes, or finding yourself congested often, it’s time to make some changes. The sources of your woes are indoor allergens from pets, dust, and plants. In rare cases, allergens can come from other sources indoors, but these are by far the most common. To relieve your allergies begin by addressing the source of allergens, especially around the bed. Don’t allow pets in the area you sleep. You will also want to vacuum and dust around your bed and your whole house regularly. Switching to an allergy free pillow is also a sound idea. A home air purifier will ensure you have a much more restful sleep, and will remove allergens and pollutants from the rest of the house as well.

Taking these simple steps should dramatically reduce allergy symptoms, and allow for a more peaceful and relaxing home life.

Your Pillow May be Allergic To You!

Author: sleepeasy

allergywoman.jpgAlert:  allergy season is here!  I realize this is not big news for those of you struggling already with symptoms of allergies, but I want to bring to your attention the importance of looking at your bedding.  One major cause of allergy afflictions is dust mites and one of their favourite places they like to make home is your bedding!  These little creatures contribute to difficulties in breathing, wheezing, sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose, coughing, chest congestion and stuffy nose.

These tiny organisms enjoy a warm and moist fibrous environment such as carpets, bedding, cloth furniture, etc.  For people suffering from asthma, they can be particularly dangerous.  If you are one of those people tossing and turning at night, waking up with nose and chest congestion, you may be the victim of dust mites in your bedding.

One of the most important areas of our bedding is our pillow protectors as our faces rub against it all night long.  An allergy free pillow protector stops the growth of germs, mold, mildew, fungus and bacteria which all provide a breeding ground for dust mites.  A dust mite free environment creates a healthier environment by improving breathing and sleep.  Considering sleep is one of the most important functions contributing to our overall health, it’s important to find a good allergy bedding solution.

Why Some Allergy Sufferers Are Irresistibly Drawn Toward This Pillow!

child-sleeping-with-allergies.jpgAll allergy sufferers, there is relief ahead for you when you lay your head down to sleep!  It’s time you took a look at what is in your bed!

As a parent of a child who suffers with allergies I always concerned myself with watching where and how long my son would play outside, where and what kind of plants were in my home or others, what time of year was it, was he working too hard during his various sports, etc.  I never thought about checking what was under his head at night that could also be contributing to his stuffed nose which he woke up with every morning.

We ordered a Genesis pillow for him and have seen improvements when he wakes up in the morning.  This pillow is made of gentle strands of pure memory foam blended with soft slickened resilient polyester fiber - no more feathers!  My son always loved the softness of a feather pillow and the way a feather pillow conformed to the shape he wished.  Now he loves the genesis pillow because it is huggable and squeezable while I love it because it is washable and keeps its shape forever, not to mention that it keeps the allergies at bay while he sleeps.

You need to see for yourself this evolution in pillow comfort!

The Nose Tells All!

allergy-testing.jpgIt is so important to pay attention to how our bodies “talk” to us to let us know when things may not be quite right.  As adults we may be so used to “feeling” a certain way that we think it is normal!  Take a few minutes to take stock of your health and start with your nose!   Parents of younger children also need to pay attention to their children’s nose as it is the best indicator of a healthy or unhealthy body.

If our noses are running it may indicate the oncoming of a cold or perhaps it is allergies.  Clear fluid from the nose would indicate allergies are present and that we are not just suffering from a cold.

Determining whether we have indoor or outdoor allergies requires an appointment with an allergist who within a 1/2 hour can give you the conclusive evidence!  With a few safe and easy tests which are pain free, you can end your wondering!  A few pricks are made on the skin with injections of various compounds such as dust, grass, pollen, etc.  If there is a red reaction on the skin surrounding the pricked area within 10-15 minutes, we know that there is a sensitivity.

If indoor or outdoor allergies are pin-pointed consideration may need to be given towards:

  • closing windows in the home or bedroom
  • running the air conditioner more moderately
  • frequent changing of the filters on the furnace
  • choosing carefully whether activities should be done inside or outside depending what the season is
  • considering vacations by water which eliminate many pollens
  • eliminating feather pillows and choosing hypo allergenic

By a few easy considerations life can become easier for those allergy-sufferers!

Developing Allergies Late in Life

anti allergen pillow

When I was growing up, I scoffed in the face of allergies. In fact, I questioned whether these supposedly pesky and sometimes debilitating conditions existed at all. I could frolic in meadows of ragweed for hours at a time without suffering adverse effects, and snuggling with pets presented no problem. Allergies are funny, however, in that they can develop and manifest themselves at any time.

Later in life, I had to give away my pet dog Charlie because his dander was forcing my breathing passages to clamp up tighter than a vice. Just when I thought I had found the solution to my woes, I developed an allergy to my favorite down pillow. Whether it was the fluff inside or the dust mites that had taken up residence I’ll never know. In any case, I found an anti allergen pillow at an affordable price online and have been sleeping soundly ever since.

An Allergy Free Night

An Allergy Free Night

If you suffer now or have ever suffered from allergies, you know how truly annoying and inconvenient they can be. Even if they are mild, it can still leave you feeling like you’re suffering from cold symptoms but without the relief of knowing they’ll fade in a few days. If you spend most of the spring hacking, sneezing, and dabbing watering eyes, you can at least find some relief at night when you’re indoors and away from these allergens.

But for many allergy sufferers, even this isn’t the case. If you’re sensitive to something like down or other feathers, you can lose some serious sleep trying to stifle the sniffling caused by your comforter and pillow. For people with these symptoms, it’s a great idea to invest in an allergy free pillow. Hopefully, this will give you enough relief to escape the allergens, at least until the next morning!
