Sleep Disorders - Me?

Author: sleepeasy
October 20, 2009

sleepwalking.gifThe definition of a sleep disorder is any condition that causes an ongoing loss of sleep, causes poor quality sleep or is a defect in the sleep-wake system.  Some sleep disorders can be characterized by odd behaviours such as sleepwalking.

We need to realize that all poor sleep is not necessarily caused by sleep disorders.  If you believe you may be suffering from chronic sleep deprivation and want to determine the disorder, a doctor should be consulted.

You can do some small steps which may help yourself determine if you should pursue medical help.  Start by logging your sleep patterns for at least two weeks, and up to four weeks.

Here are some behaviours to consider recording.  Do you:

  • snore
  • wake up several times during the night
  • become restless/anxious
  • have nightmares
  • wake up tired
  • wake up with a headache

Your doctor will greatly appreciate as much detail as you can provide in your basic sleep diary.

It may seem tedious work but our goal is to give you back a healthy body and mind!  Don’t deny your body what it requires - SLEEP! Sometimes the answers may be simple, other times the answers may take time to discover, but I think you will enjoy knowing and having a good night’s rest.  It’s worth the work!

You may notice the following if you are sleep deprived:

  • Faster aging
  • Higher susceptibility to colds, flu and other infections.
  • Increased risk of accidents
  • Experience more emotional problems, such as depression and anxiety
  • Irritable and mood swings

  • Increase risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and death

Sleepiness during the day could pose a real danger for you and those around you.  You may be an accident waiting to happen!

Waste no more time in seeking to stop these effects on your body.   The answer may be as simple as choosing a pillow to promote better sleep or changing things in your environment to promote longer sleeping hours.  Life does not have to pass you by quicker than you want it to!

Sleep…Good Word or Bad Word?

Author: sleepeasy
September 19, 2009

person-sleeping.jpgSleep…what does that word conjure up in your mind?  Comfy bed, rest, energized, beautiful dreams, waking up refreshed…if these are your thoughts, you may be one of the lucky ones.  For 40 million Americans the word sleep means waking up feeling lousy, tossing and turning, pacing, frustration, etc.  There are more than 80 recognized defined sleep disorders which all too frequently go unrecognized, undiagnosed and untreated.

One of the results of this is the huge cost to both individuals and society.  Automobile accidents, often fatal, caused by sleepiness account for more than 100,000 incidents each year.  Poor judgment and decisions made by sleep-deprived employees result in on-the-job accidents.  Job performance suffers when memory and concentration produce negative results on required tasks.  On the relational side, work and personal friendships suffer when personalities turn ugly because of being sleep-deprived.

We’ve included some interesting notes on insomnia:

  • more women than men suffer from insomnia
  • older adults (60+) suffer more from insomnia
  • third most frequent health complaint
  • increased risk of mortality
  • faster nighttime heartbeat than people who sleep well
  • people with insomnia are more likely to develop depression
  • people with insomnia are more likely to develop alcohol and drug or nicotine dependence
  • people with insomnia are more likely to have fast nighttime brain waves than normal sleepers, possibly indicating more mental activity during the night

If you or any member of your family, close friend, co-worker or whoever, have sleep problems, the first step is to identify the problem and then seek treatment as soon as you can.  No matter how you look at it, if sleep deprivation is left untreated, it could cost you your life.

Getting Your Rest: The External Environment

No matter what a person claims, he or she still operates better on a full night’s sleep. Without our valuable rest, we are more liable to be cranky and irritable, to miss small details during the course of the working day, and to take naps – which throw off our routines even more. If you’re experiencing sleep problems, try investigating your external environment for clues as to the reason why.

Your neighbors might be blaring loud music at all hours of the night, in which case you’ll want to invest in some earplugs. Sensitivity to light can also stave off sleep; try some darker, thicker curtain to block out that flashing sign across the street. Finally and most importantly, make sure that your comforter and pillows are especially soft and conducive to sleep. Sometimes the answer is simpler than you could have imagined.

Getting the Sleep You Need

Getting the Sleep You Need

Without exception, we all function at our best after a good night’s sleep. While the exact amount of sleep we require might vary, the overall value of those crucial 40 winks does not. Unfortunately, many people have a hard time falling asleep at night, and this problem can carry over into drowsiness during the next day. If you count yourself among the millions of people who experience sleep issues, try one or more of the following tips.

One of the best ways to help sleep problems is to switch pillows. A lumpy pillow belongs in the trash, not at the head of your bed. Next, set aside a block of time for exercise. A night-time workout helps eliminate stress, but you’ll want to leave plenty of time between your exercise routine and bedtime. Lastly, consider cutting off your caffeine intake well before you hit the sack. For obvious reasons, a late-night cup of joe can keep you tossing and turning for hours.

Sleeping Through the Snores

Sleeping Through the Snores

There’s nothing worse than trying to get sleep while the person next to you is snoring away. It’s particularly frustrating because you’re suffering while the other person is blissfully sleeping, completely unaware of how much they’re disrupting your sleep cycle. This is cited as a common problem among couples, but there are certain ways to solve the issue. For one, the non-snorer can always wear earplugs to bed. This will drown out the sound and allow you an uninterrupted night’s sleep.

But if you’re opposed to that for any reason, you can also have the person try a snore no more pillow. Specially designed, this pillow will help the person’s neck align the way it is intended to. This correct alignment stops the snoring in many individuals. If the problem continues, however, and you simply can’t take it anymore, consider consulting a doctor. The snoring might be the sign of something more serious at play such as sleep apnea.

That Street Light May Be The Cause of Your Sleeping Problems!

Author: sleepeasy
April 27, 2009

streetlight.jpgWe have all become more aware of the importance of making every attempt to do our part to reduce, reuse, and recycle.  One area of saving our earth has concentrated on light energy.  We’ve begun to change over our light bulbs to energy efficient ones and try to turn off all lights when we are leaving a room.  We’re also learning that while we save the earth, we may also solve some sleeping problems!

Light is basically energy, and if, while we are in a deep sleep, we are exposed to it abruptly, it can immediately affect our heart rates, breathing and serotonin levels.  Consider that even long-term  light sources while we sleep can have severe damage on our health and mental outlook.  There may be cause to consider the light sources around us at night.  Do I have the glow of a streetlight through my bedroom window?  Is there a nightlight left on throughout the evening?  Is the moonlight another threat?  Do my neighbours have a porch or garage light near my bedroom?  These subtle light sources could be affecting your sleep pattern.

When you invest in a memory foam pillow to give you the perfect night’s rest, don’t let an intruding source of light stop the sweet dreams from happening!

Common Cures For Problems Sleeping

Author: Sleepologist
April 22, 2009

sleepingproblemsfoam-perfectfoampillows.jpgMillions of people around the world have problems sleeping, and while some can be attributed to documented conditions like Sleep Apnea, some of it is just restlessness.  Because of the sheer amount of people with sleeping problems, there are thousands of ways that have been developed to combat not receiving adequate rest at night.  One of the most common causes of sleeping problems is stress, and to combat this, it’s a good idea to take steps at night and throughout the day to relieve the mind.  You might do some light exercise, meditation, take frequent five minute breaks, or just work harder to block out the problems that cause stress.  Sleeping problems can also be caused by physical problems due to a mattress being too hard or too soft, and even pillows can contribute.  This can be solved with a mattress pad and a new pillow.

There are numerous different causes of sleeping problems, and the above two are just the most common.  It’s best to seek professional help if sleeping problems persist for more than a month.  But in truth a lot of people can identify the source of their sleeping problems with a little insight into their lives and some thought.

Snore-No-More For A Better Night’s Sleep

Author: sleepeasy
March 11, 2009

snore-no-more-pillow.pngWhy is it that our ordinary pillow seems to be either too soft or too hard, too high or too low?  Why do we seem to have tension headaches, muscle spasms, stiff necks, poor circulation or shoulder pain?  Well, these ordinary pillows are filled with feathers or have fiber filled cores which do not provide the healthy support necessary.  They are unable to reduce obstacles in the airway caused by poor sleeping posture whether we are lying on our side, back or stomach.  Our heads and necks are placed in an unnatural position which contribute to airway obstruction and/or cause undue stress pressure and tension on our vessels, nerves, neck muscles and ligaments.

The Snore-No-More is designed to help reduce airway obstruction and improve sleeping posture.  At last, a pillow designed by a doctor to improve sleeping posture to provide a luxurious comfort for a better night’s sleep!
